General description

Temperature sensor – a device that converts the measured temperature into a standardized electrical signal for further processing. Temperature sensors are used in almost all areas of human activity – from controlling the temperature of water in an electric kettle to maintaining an accurate temperature range in a chemical reactor or in a steel furnace, where the slightest deviation from the norm can lead to many hours of plant shutdown and costly repairs. There are a huge number of types of sensors, the most common of which are thermistors, thermocouples, integral temperature sensors.

Thermistor
The thermistor or thermistor is the most popular type of sensor. The principle of operation of the thermistor is based on the change in the resistance of the metal depending on the ambient temperature. The higher it is, the greater the resistance. The dependence is described using the temperature coefficient of resistance. In accordance with the standard, the resistance of any thermal resistance must be zero at zero temperature in Celsius. Basically, sensors with a resistance of 100 and 1000 ohms are produced. The name indicates the type of metal and resistance. For example Pt1000 – platinum 1000 Ohm, TCM100 – copper 100 Ohm.

Thermocouple
The principle of operation of a thermocouple is based on the occurrence of thermoEMF when different metals come into contact. The value of thermoEMF depends on temperature. The following pairs are commonly used as metals:

chromel-alumel (K international, XA domestic)
chromel-kopel (L,ТХК)
platinum-rhodium-platinum (S,TTP)
At the output of these pairs, a small voltage is obtained, measured in mV, which must then be amplified. It also becomes necessary to use cables made of the same material as the pair. Nevertheless, the main advantage is the ability to measure a wide temperature range – from -200 to 1800 C.

Integrated temperature sensors
The principle of operation is based on the dependence of the p-n junction on the ambient temperature. The range of measured temperatures is -55 to 150 0С. With high measurement accuracy, ease of operation and low cost, integrated temperature sensors are widely used in microprocessor technology.
